Four-Six Weeks Before
- Contact Classic Movers to set up an appointment for them to visually survey your home
- Set your moving date
- Notify the Post Office of your change of address. Visit www.usps.com or get a form from your mail delivery person
- Decide if you're going to pack yourself, or use Classic Movers experienced professionals
- Notify your friends, family, creditors, doctors' offices, financial institutions, schools and magazine subscriptions of your move
- If you have children, check into schools at your destination for pre-registration procedures and be sure to obtain current school records
Three Weeks Before
- Arrange to have utilities and telephones disconnected
- Arrange for services in your new home
- If necessary, make travel arrangements, including hotel reservations and car rental
- Decide what to keep and what to discard. Hold a garage sale or give items to charity.
Two Weeks Before
- Keep packing and organizing! If Classic Movers professionals are doing the packing, allow them 1-2 days prior to your move date to complete the job.
- Return library books and any borrowed items
- Take care of banking, bills, stocks and investments
- Pick up all items being cleaned, repaired or stored
- Take pets to the vet for their records and immunizations
- Drain gasoline and oil from power equipment
- Have your cars serviced for the trip
One Week Before
- Transfer prescriptions
- Arrange for newspaper and other delivery services to be discontinued in your old location, and started in your new location
- Start gathering items to take with you during the move
Days Before
- Pack your family's immediate needs in a separate box and mark clearly. Items may include a coffee pot, towels, toilet paper, hand soap, bedding and a few dishes.
- Arrange personal items: pack luggage, valuables and important paperwork
- Defrost and dry refrigerator and freezer being moved
Moving Day
- Be sure your family has a good breakfast
- Do a final walk-through of your home once the truck is loaded
- Shut off water, lights and furnace
- Close and lock windows and doors

Traveling with Pets
- Make sure your pet has health & ID tags
- Take veterinarian records with you
- Unless your pet is used to traveling, take it on short drives prior to the trip so it can get used to travel by car
- Use a pet carrier while traveling to create a safe "den" for your animal's comfort
- Don't feed or water your pet prior to leaving
- Never leave your pet unattended, especially in the car
- Be sure to take along toys, treats and grooming necessities
Items that we can not move
- ALL LIQUIDSOpen boxes or packing containers
- Plants - One of the things that long distance movers won’t move is plants. It is illegal to transport plants more than 150 miles without a special license. This is because pests, such as the emerald ash borer or other predators, can hitch a ride on your house plant and allow those pests to be introduced into a new area.
- Hazardous materials - You may not stop to consider them as hazardous, but paint, aerosol cans, paint thinner, batteries, fire extinguishers and other such items are hazardous to move. A good rule of thumb is that if you can’t ship it or dispose of it in your regular trash collection, your movers probably won’t be able to move it. The best plan is to use up such items before you move and dispose properly of the ones that are left over.
- Perishable Food - movers won’t move anything that will spoil, such as perishable food, frozen food or open containers. It’s best to consume what you can before the move and/or move your frozen food in a cooler yourself.
- Explosives - we won’t move ammunition, black powder, primers, propellants, or even souvenir explosives you may have collected.
- Flammable items - These are also hazardous materials, so use up or discard appropriately any kerosene, charcoal, lighter fluid, paint remover and the like before the move.
- Corrosives - Items such as muriatic acid, nitric acid and batteries with acid, are items that movers won’t move. If moving any batteries make sure they are the non spillable gel-type.
- Power Equipment with Fuel - The list of things movers won’t move also includes power equipment with fuel in the tank. This includes motorcycles, lawn mowers, weed eaters, and so forth. Before movers will move these items, you must drain the fuel or run the item(s) until the fuel reserve is completely empty. Be sure to do this at least 24 hours before loading.
